Asa Condé Station, Xeno Guild HQ, Crapti Region, Jesc Arm

Boileau hated these stupid meetings with the fiery passion of a thousand stars going supernova simultaneously in the midst of a black hole. The problem? Attendance was absolutely mandatory for all senior commissioners within the Xeno Guild. Bureaucratic history of the guild demanded it, and the current guild master was, at the very least, a traditionalist. They acquiesced to the Administrator’s demands for continued bureaucracy and in exchange, the five senior commissioners maintained their hold on their powerful positions. No, this wasn’t the worst part. The Administrator never appeared in person, snubbing the meetings and remoting in somehow. This ruffled the Buma’s feathers more than anything else.

Boileau had dressed down for the occasion, intent on showing the rest of the senior commissioners his true feelings regarding the required meeting. He was wearing his comfortable cloak and cowl, which was both stylish and utilitarian, if a bit warm for the environment. A fitted harness crossed his chest. Attached to it were many interchangeable pouches, most of which he kept filled with snacks, usually freeze-dried rodents of some sort. On his hip he wore a single laser pistol in a highly polished holster. The pistol was more for show than anything else. Until recently, the Buma hadn’t even fired it on a practice range since he’d purchased it years before.

He looked around the gathered group and couldn’t help but feel a little disdain for them all. None had any ambition; they were secure in their own sense of power and importance. None wanted to do anything more with their position. It was sad. He was a Buma after all, a race dedicated to exploring the galaxy and encouraging the growth of the Galactic Union simultaneously. Every new species brought a unique element to the union, and it was the Xeno Guild’s job to bring these new species into the fold and allow them to communicate with the others. It was in his genetics to strive to learn more, yet there were times he doubted the objective nature of his fellow guildmembers.

The other four were weak, complacent. They had grown lazy in their years at the top of the heap. Boileau knew he was the visionary of the group, the radical new thinker. He’d only been on the Board of Commissioners for 82 years, after all. He was a mere infant when compared to the others in terms of time served on the board. However, he offered one thing none of the others brought to the table—actual experience.

Boileau had started off in the Merchant Guild long ago before abruptly leaving and joining the Xeno Guild. He had seen opportunity for growth in the smaller guild, whereas the Merchant Guild was stagnant and offered him little in terms of a challenge. He had sworn to change the culture and mindset of those within the Xeno Guild, to embrace their power and opportunity to curtail the expanding corruption of the other guilds. He’d been successful, to a degree.
